A Trusted review of the Sony Alpha NEX-6
The Sony Alpha NEX-6 is a spanking new compact system camera that is more like a combination of both the NEX-7 and the NEX-5R compact system cameras. This camera has the phase-detection sensor of the 5R and the XGA OLED viewfinder of the NEX-7. However, it is more sophisticated because it has a mode dial that is stacked above a rear thumbwheel which ensures ease of use. This feature lacks even in the flagship Sony NEX-7 model. In addition, it has a command dial and an Fn button, which debuted on the NEX-5R model. With the NEX-6 model, it is not the inside that counts only, but also the overall performance.
The camera has an in built flash. Therefore, you do not have to look for a detachable flash. In addition, the hotshoe design is a standard design that can accommodate a wide variety of third-party accessories. This is a big change from the proprietary accessory port of the NEX-5R and also the NEX-7′s hotshoe. These two models necessitate an adapter for most of the third-party accessories.
The uses a 2.4-million dot OLED viewfinder acquired from the NEX-7 model or the Alpha a99 models. It is impressively sharp and is not on the same league compared to any other electronic viewfinder. This is not an optical viewfinder but it supportively relays the white balance and exposure problems before any picture is taken. The only problem with the dot OLED panel is the slight blurring when the camera is moved sharply and the view is somewhat contrasty.
The cutting-edge 16-50mm kit lens of the NEX-6 model is possibly the major invention. There is a motorized zoom function which falls down to30mm when it is powered down. This enables the camera to be carried around with ease compared to the older models that have 18-55mm lens. This is about 60mm long and at least two times heavier.
The zoom function of the NEX-6 model is motorized instead of being purely mechanical. However, the lens ring delivers tactile control and enables the user to adjust the zoom swiftly and accurately. The ring controls of the NEX-6 model center in manual focus mode. So the zoom function is regulated by a lever that is on the lens barrel. Most users prefer the direct mechanical controls however, this lens is considerable more enjoyable and satisfying to use compared to the ring-less 14-42mm Panasonic power zoom lens.
Furthermore, it seems to be sharper in comparison to the Sony 18-55mm lens.
The NEX-6 and the NEX-5R have no difference with regards to picture quality. However, the NEX-6 camera is more appealing for users who require a built-in viewfinder and more hands-on control. Most compact system cameras do not have the built-in viewfinder feature and Sony Company has succeeded in maintaining a small body size camera with inclusive of the near-side-mounted viewfinder.
All the NEX-6 controls are by and large an unquestionable success.
In addition, the NEX-6 is better designed and more reasonably priced that the NEX-7. In fact the Sony Alpha NEX-6 is now the very best NEX model so far.
